It’s Christmas Eve! That means lots of presents for me. Yes, presents on Christmas Eve. And I’m not talking midnight. I talking 2:30 p.m. Aside from the stocking and Santa’s gift, my family has always opened presents before supper on Christmas Eve. Yeah, I was the luckiest kid on the block. To give this phenomenon some context though, my mom’s Ukrainian and we do the traditional Ukrainian Christmas Eve dinner every year. But still, presents in the afternoon on Christmas Eve? AWESOME.
Just because it’s Christmas doesn’t meet the song of the week gets retired. This week, Architecture in Helsinki make an appearance. This band is lots of fun and full of surprises. Surprises like a little infant saying “attic in the basement” three quarters of the way through “The Owls Go.” The sheer cuteness of that moment made me listen to this song a couple times more than any of their other songs.

Man, this blog is really starting to look like a place to come once a week and listen to a random song. To combat this, I will talk about the Oilers (typical Edmontonian, eh?). I will also promise to never talk about the Oilers or use the word “eh” again unless I have a really good reason.
Last year, I made the bold prediction that Edmonton and Chicago would meet in the 2010 Western Conference Finals. I think I was right about one of those teams. That team embarrassed the Oilers 9-2 last night, the worst blow out since Winnipeg scored 9 goals on us in 1995. Little known fact: after scoring those 9 goals, the Jets all got really drunk and somebody moved them to Phoenix without them noticing
Okay, song of the week. A couple months ago, I won $3000 by solving the “Mega Money Music Montage” on Sonic 102.9. The songs stumping people that I figured out were Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes and Thrash Unreal by Against Me!. I have the Against Me! album in my iTunes, so I listened to that song on repeat trying to confirm my suspicion that it would win me $3K.

I went to Spain this summer and had the pleasure of seeing Beck perform in a small venue in Madrid. Hearing 2000 Spanish people screaming “Soy un perdedor!” in the chorus of Loser was a definite highlight. Here’s a link to the YouTube video I found of that phenomenon in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wsrLEIzmH4
Another highlight was the live rendition of the song Girl, which I enjoyed so much that I came back to Canada and played it over and over again.

I went a very long time thinking that all The Beach Boys’ songs had a variation of the word “surf” in them. Then I discovered Pet Sounds and realized Brian Wilson is one of the greatest songwriters of all time. An excellent example is God Only Knows, with 11 plays in my iTunes.
